Apprentice Pre-school Assistant/Early years practitioner

To undertake a Level 2/3 apprenticeship/ qualification
To work as part of the pre-school team and at a later stage to become part of the key person (KP) system (with support and supervision). To provide high quality education and care for young children which meets the individual needs of the children attending the setting.

⦁ Along with the other staff, assist with the planning of the curriculum using the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) for guidance.
⦁ To help set up the room for the daily programme and to help tidy away at the end of the session.
⦁ To (eventually) act as a key person to a small group of children (with support and supervision) – to build an effective relationship with parents/carers and ensuring that each child’s individual needs are recognised and met.
⦁ Work in partnership with other staff / parents / carers / other family members / other organisations.
⦁ To advise the pre-school manager of any concerns – e.g. about children / parents / staff or any concerns about equipment – preserving confidentiality as necessary.
⦁ To teach children, offering an appropriate level of support and stimulating play experiences.
⦁ To ensure that children are kept safe and that you understand when to follow child protection procedures.
⦁ To support meal / snack times within the pre-school.
⦁ To actively participate at team meetings, supervisor meetings and appraisal meetings.
⦁ To attend training courses as required and to take responsibility for your development.
⦁ To keep completely confidential any information regarding the children, their families or other staff, which is acquired as part of the job.
⦁ To be aware of and adhere to all the settings operational policies and procedures, e.g. health and safety, fire precautions, dropping off and collecting of children, food safety, cleanliness and hygiene of the setting, etc.
⦁ To ensure that adequate records are kept and updated regularly.
⦁ To promote the Pre-school to current parents and potential customers.
⦁ To undertake any other reasonable duties as directed by the pre-school Manager in accordance with the settings business objectives.

This job description is not an exhaustive list of duties and the apprentice will be required to
undertake any other reasonable duties discussed and directed by the line manager.

Essential criteria:-

⦁ Willingness to learn.
⦁ Good communication skills.
⦁ An understanding of play-based approaches to children’s learning and development.
⦁ Commitment to equal opportunities.
⦁ Commitment to working with young children and families.
⦁ Friendly and flexible approach at work which facilitates the development of effective relationships.
⦁ Willing to work with children who have Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND) and their families.
⦁ Ability to work as part of a team and on own initiative.
⦁ Must have a current Disclosure and Barring Service Certificate (DBS) or be prepared to undertake a check before working in the pre-school.

Desirable criteria or willingness to learn:-

⦁ Willingness to undertake further training.
⦁ Current Paediatric and / or First Aid at work qualification.
⦁ Previous experience of working with young children.
⦁ Basic knowledge of child development (birth to 5 years).
⦁ Basic knowledge of Early Years Foundation stage (EYFS).
⦁ Awareness of child protection procedures.

Hours – 32.5 hours per week (pre-school term time only – Monday to Friday 08.30 to 15:00

Pay – £5.28 for 16/17 year olds (rates for older applicants can be discussed)

This post is exempt from the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act (1974) and does require a
criminal records check. Applicants must be prepared to disclose any convictions they may
have and any orders which have been made against them.
